BELLEVUE, Wash.-January 16, 2002 -U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray (Piper Jaffray) financial advisor Meena Cheng was honored with an Award of Excellence by "Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program" for her volunteer efforts.
Five years ago, Cheng, an advisor in Piper Jaffray's Bellevue, Wash., brokerage office, conceived "Cooks for Books," an innovative way to raise funds for the children's charity. The program is an annual auction and dinner combined with cooking demonstrations performed by prominent local chefs. Cheng has continued to work to expand the program. Consistent with the firm's Guiding Principles, this is the most recent example of Piper Jaffray's commitment to contributing to the communities, in which its employees and clients live and work.
Founded as "Books for Kids" in 1990, and re-named Page Ahead in 2001, the organization promotes reading activities and provides new books to at-risk children and their families to enrich their lives and strengthen our communities. The non-profit organization encourages parents, caregivers, and community volunteers to read with children, help schools and social service agencies run successful literacy programs, and holds events designed to inspire children's love of reading.
Since its inception, Page Ahead has placed 860,000 new books into the hands of 310,000 at-risk children in Washington State who would otherwise have no books at home. In its 2002-03 program year, Page Ahead will provide 143,000 additional new books to 50,000 more at-risk children in Washington State.
