Piper Jaffray Senior Vice President, Investments Daryl Eckman developed the "Piper Jaffray Athlete of the Month" program last year to recognize high school students for their efforts both on and off the field. Throughout the school year, Eckman along with his partner at Piper Jaffray, Financial Advisor John Kempf, works with the Fiesta, Glendale, Peoria, Mesa and Scottsdale school districts in the Phoenix area to present the "Piper Jaffray Athlete of the Month" award to two students (one male and one female) from each district per month. This year's top 11 "Piper Jaffray Athlete of the Year" winners were chosen from the more than 70 "Piper Jaffray Athlete of the Month" award winners.

During the event, all guests viewed the Arizona Diamondback victory over the San Diego Padres from the suite-level of BANK ONE Ballpark, were provided lunch, "Athlete of the Year" t-shirts and Diamondbacks hats. In addition, the awards program featured two special guests: Joe Garagiola Jr., executive vice president and general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Troy Hayden, co-anchor of FOX 10 News, who served as master of ceremonies.

"The highlight of the event was when each athletic director from the participating school districts provided an overview of each of the students nominated from his or her district," said Eckman. "The athletic and scholastic achievements of the students were remarkable. We are thrilled to honor such a talented and committed group of students."
