Ben Schmitt

Ben Schmitt is a managing director in the financial services investment banking group at Piper Sandler. Previously, Schmitt was a director at Sandler O’Neill + Partners, L.P. Schmitt joined Sandler O’Neill in 2005. Based in the firm’s Chicago office, he maintains a specific focus on mergers and acquisitions, capital raising and strategic planning for depository institutions.

Since joining Sandler O'Neill, Schmitt has been involved in a number of bank and thrift merger transactions, including German American Bancorp’s acquisitions of Citizens First Corp and First Security, First Midwest Bancorp’s acquisitions of BankManagers (Park Bank), Northern States Financial, Standard Bancshares, NI Bancshares, Great Lakes Financial and Banco Popular (Chicago), First Financial Bancorp’s acquisition of MainSource Financial Group, Chemical Financial’s acquisition of Talmer, the sale of ATBancorp to MidWestOne Financial Group, the sale of Taylor Capital Group to MB Financial Inc., the sale of THE National Bank to Triumph Bancorp, and the sale of First Western Bank to First Interstate BancSystem. Schmitt has advised clients on debt and equity capital issuances, including Pedcor/United Fidelity, Signature Bancorp, FSB Financial, First Midwest Bancorp, Midland States Bancorp, and Old National Bancorp, among others. Prior to joining Sandler O’Neill, he worked at Mercer Investment Consulting where he focused on investment portfolio reporting & analytics.

Schmitt graduated from the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance with honors.
