C.K. Smith is a managing director and head of loan strategies in the financial services group at Piper Sandler.
Previously, Smith was a principal at Sandler O'Neill + Partners, L.P., where he was responsible for managing Sandler O'Neill Mortgage Finance L.P. He guided the subsidiary in advising clients for securitization, sale, and acquisition of performing, sub-performing and non-performing residential, multifamily, commercial, and consumer loans. Under his guidance from 1996 to 2016, Sandler O’Neill advised on over 910 loan portfolio transactions with an aggregate principal amount in excess of $42.72B.
Smith oversaw and assisted with constructing asset valuations consistent with FASB/GAAP and asset bid price levels to support asset acquisitions and portfolio restructurings involving multibillion-dollar loan and servicing portfolios. He was responsible for overseeing and contributing to the firm’s development of a static life-of-loan projected cumulative loss model. This innovative model generated asset valuations to support portfolio valuations, FDIC- and CUNA-assisted bids, and open bank acquisitions. Smith oversaw the valuation of over $2.5 billion of loans serviced for others quarterly. He coordinated all transaction-related activities to ensure professional execution, realization of client objectives, and integration of multiple transaction requirements for analytical, underwriting, delivery, and valuation resources.
His career in the mortgage banking industry spans 32 years, representing Sandler O’Neill Mortgage Finance L.P., Thompson McKinnon Mortgage Finance, Indiana Mortgage Company, Olympic Mortgage Company, and Lincoln Service Corp.
