James Chiarelli is head of the Piper Sandler debt capital markets team. He has more than 25 years of experience in debt capital markets, structured and project finance, in addition to special situation and distressed asset investments.

In his role managing the Piper Sandler debt capital markets team over the last 15 years, Chiarelli oversees capital-raising and financing activities for Piper Sandler clients in the bank and non-bank public/private lending and investing markets, sourcing capital from over 350 different accounts, including banks, non-bank direct lenders, VC firms, venture lenders and the institutional loan market. He also works closely with the firm’s restructuring and equity private placement groups.

Chiarelli joined Piper Sandler from Macquarie Capital where he was a senior vice president in the special situations group. Previously, he spent 10 years at ABN AMRO in project & leveraged finance.

Chiarelli’s industry experience includes healthcare, retail and consumer products, technology, media & telecommunications, power, oil & gas, mining, transportation, infrastructure, chemicals, hospitality and education in the U.S. and internationally. Over the last decade, he has worked very closely with his healthcare banking partners across the Piper Sandler platform, sourcing capital for high-growth companies across Med-Tech, healthcare services, HCIT, pharma and Bio-Tech, to affect acquisitions, refinancings, growth capital raises, liquidity events and large public company carve-out transactions.
